How to Cite Generative A.I.

Real or Fake Citations: How to Check

Sometimes A.I tools hallucinate and suggest sources that do not exist.

To check if a source is real:

  1. Type the article title in the OneSearch box on the Library homepage.
  2. If the article appears, it is real. Use OneSearch to help you generate a citation.
  3. If the article does not appear in the results, select Advanced Search and Add Results Beyond Your Library's Collection. Search for the article.
  4. If you find the article, it is real. If you don't find the article, it may be a hallucination.
  5. When in doubt, Ask a Librarian.

Check Your Citations

If you use A.I. to generate citations, be sure to check them against LCC Library's citation guides to make sure they include the information needed.
