The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot is a compelling non-fiction account of the life and legacy of a poor southern tobacco farmer named Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta died of an aggressive strain of cervical cancer in 1951, but not before cells from her tumor were removed for experimentation without her consent or knowledge. Henrietta’s cells, known as HeLa cells, went on to revolutionize medical research and spurred bioethical and medical ethics debates that continue today. Skloot’s telling poignantly describes the life and death of Henrietta, the birth and life of HeLa, and the tragic and emotional journey of Henrietta’s family as they become aware of the existence of her cells. Within this context unfolds a moral and ethical exploration of privacy, autonomy, vulnerability, and medical research.
