Before searching for LGBTQIA+ books in theLibrary catalog or OneSearch, brainstorm some search terms that will help you get the best results. If you should ever need help locating a particular topic, please contact a Reference Librarian.
Different words will get you different results, so consider all your options, and find synonyms
Use 2-4 keywords
More words = fewer/narrower results
Fewer words = more/broader results
Use quotation marks around words that go together to create a phrase or term, like:
"gender identity"
Shorten a word to its trunk or root to get alternate endings - with an asterisk * (shift 8), e.g., lgbt* finds lgbtq, lgbtqia, and lgbtqia+
Apply the Boolean connector AND to combine unlike ideas, e.g., lesbian AND disabilities
Apply the Boolean connector OR to connect synonyms, e.g., gay OR lesbian
The first and most enduring award for LGBTQIA+ books is the Stonewall Book Awards, sponsored by the American Library Association's Rainbow Round Table. Since Isabel Miller's Patience and Sarah received the first award in 1971, many other books have been honored for exceptional merit relating to the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender experience.
For over 30 years, Lambda Literary has championed LGBTQ books and authors. No other organization in the world serves LGBTQ writers and readers more comprehensively than Lambda Literary. We believe that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer literature is fundamental to the preservation of our culture, and that LGBTQ lives are affirmed when our stories are written, published, and read.
Rainbow RT Reviews is the official source of media reviews for the Rainbow Round Table of the American Library Association (ALA). Reviews are written by Rainbow RT members and cover GLBT-themed materials for children, young adults, and adults.
